John and Evoline (Smith) Eivins
Gen 1: James Evans >> Gen 2: John Eivins
John Frederick Eivins (1833-1916)
John F. Eivins was born in Estill County, Kentucky on December 20, 1833. The 1850 US Census shows that he was living with James Evans, age 57, Hannah, age 46, Louisa, age 19, John F, age 16, Elizabeth, age, 13, and Delina, age 9. John also had at least one older brother, James, that was no longer living with the family in 1850.
Gen 1: Stephen Thomas >> Gen 2: John Thomas, Sr >> Gen 3: Isaac Thomas >> Gen 4: Solomon Thomas >> Gen 5: Sophronia Thomas >> Gen 6: Evoline Smith
Evoline (Smith) Eivins (1841-1924)
Evoline Smith was born on 18 August 1841in Grant County, Indiana to Richard and Sophronia (Thomas) Smith according to the death certificate and obituary. However, Sophronia's marriage record indicates that the groom was Parker Smith. I suspect his name was perhaps Richard Parker Smith. Evoline's father presumably died sometime between 1845-1850. In 1850 Sophronia and her son, Mannon age 5, were living with Sophronia's parents, Solomon and Anna Thomas, in Grant County, Indiana while Evoline (age 9) was living in in Madison County, Indiana with the William Chamness family.
Between 1850 and 1859 both John Eivins and Evoline Smith relocated to Schuyler County, Missouri. The couple presumably met there. The couple eloped “with one horse which both rode, they made their way to Lancaster Mo. were they were married” [16] on 9 January 1859. The first child of 12, James Mannon Eivins, was born on 23 November 1859. In February 1861 the Civil War broke out. The second child, Lucinda "Carrie" Caroline Eivins, was born on 15 July 1861. The verbal family lore, at this point, is that John's brothers living in Schuyler County, Missouri were for the South while John was for the North. This caused a division in the family. One brother informed John that the Confederates were planning to burn down John and Evoline's house that night. In response, John and Evoline, with a 2 year old child and 2 day old infant, packed up what belongings they could and immediately moved to Clarke, County, Iowa.
It is noted that the surname was Evans but became Eivins at the time of John and Evoline's relocation to Iowa. There are two proposed reasons for the change in spelling: 1) John and Evoline were unable to read or write and the name was written down incorrectly on a scrap of paper. 2) The name was intentionally changed as a sign of a break from the brothers.
Between 1885 and 1895 John and Evoline and their children moved to a farm in Grandriver Township in Madison County, Iowa where they lived out the rest of their lives.
